Pathetic situation at the income tax portal of the Government of India.

I have a client who is residing in the US and he wanted to make an application for allotment of PAN. He intends to do business in India by making investments.

I went through the income tax portal at www.incometaxindia.gov.in On the left column, I found PAN and Apply Online with links to NSDL and UTITSL and on clicking I was taken to http://www.utitsl.co.in/pan/Form49Aonline.html To my dismay, I found that the form is for physical application and not an online application.

I called the helpline at Aayakar Sampark Kendra (ASK) PAN/TAN/OLTAS & eFiling queries on Ph.Np.0124-24380000 which provides wonderfully inefficient service. They do not know whether a PAN application can be made online.

I wonder whether the celebrated Finance Minister is aware of this.

I expect the authorities to immediately provide for facilities to make application for PAN through online payment. If the Government can publish advertisement and spend money, they might as well improve the services.
